April 22nd, 2015 - Sixty years ago, Dick Hendley decided to start a business.
After attending Clemson University and establishing himself as a standout blocking back - he lettered in football four straight years and was named winner of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy in 1950, his senior year - he left South Carolina to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1951, drafted in the very first round of picks. He chose to cut his professional career short, however, and return to his beloved hometown of Greenville, South Carolina.
After his return, he started up IH services in 1955, a very small business cleaning gas station and restaurant restrooms in just a few places around the area. Mr. Hendley wasn’t one to settle for “good enough”, though, so he worked on thinking of a good way to expand his business. That’s when it occurred to him…
what if he offered to have his business be responsible for the indirect support work in manufacturing businesses such as sweeping, packing, and cleaning? It would give the manufacturing companies the benefit of freeing up their employees to focus on making things, not just cleaning up all day. Years before it became a common practice, Dick Hendley had hit upon the idea of outsourcing.
His first industrial client began working with IH Services in 1958 - and still uses their services today!
The last sixty years have seen incredible growth - IH Services and the Hendley family companies (Pinnacle Staffing, Gatekeeper Maintenance, Newbold Services, and Peak Workforce Solutions) now employ over 4,000 people in 22 states, with an annual revenue of over $115 million. At the heart of it all is Dick Hendley’s understanding that great work will come from great employees. Mr. Hendley understood that if you treat people with respect, provide solid benefits so they can take care of their own families, and recognize and reward hard work, that your employees will deliver a level of service for you that will truly be above and beyond expectations.
While Dick passed away in October of 2014, his son Ryan currently heads up the company in the position of CEO, ensuring that IH Services remains a family-owned business with deep roots in Upstate South Carolina.
For over sixty years, we’ve turned finding the right people for the right job to ensure clean working environments into an art form. We look forward to continuing to grow as leaders in our field and community.
